Harold Godwineson, the Last Anglo-Saxon King, owed everything to his father. Who was this Godwine, first Earl of Wessex and known as the Kingmaker? Was he an unscrupulous schemer, using King and Witan to gain power? Or was he the greatest of all Saxon Earls, protector of the English against the hated Normans? We follow Godwine from his obscure beginnings as he was befriended by the Danes, favored by Canute the Great, given an Earldom and raised to the highest level of society. He sired nine children, among them four Earls, a Queen and a future King. Along with his power came a struggle to keep his enemies at bay, and Godwine’s best efforts were brought down by the misdeeds of his eldest son Swegn. Although he became father-in-law to a reluctant Edward the Confessor, his fortunes dwindled as the Normans gained prominence at court. Driven into exile, Godwine regathered his forces and came back even stronger, only to discover that his second son Harold was destined to surpass him in renown and glory.

When Katrina Shawver met the eighty-five-year-old Henry Zguda, he possessed an exceptional memory, a surprising cache of original documents and photos, and a knack for meeting the right people at the right time. In the interview style of Tuesdays with Morrie, Henry relates in his own voice a life as a champion swimmer and swimming coach, interrupted by three years imprisoned in Auschwitz and Buchenwald as a Polish (Catholic) political prisoner. Told with a pragmatic gallows humor, and sense of hope, this bridge to history is supported by extensive research, original documents, and rare photos. Ultimately, HENRY is the story a resilient young man who survives by his wits, humor, friends, and a healthy dose of luck.

Memoir – And Then I Am Gone

And Then I Am GoneAnd Then I Am Gone
A Walk with Thoreau
By Mathias B. Freese
Publisher: Wheatmark
Published: September 2017

Genre: Memoir
Formats Available For Review: Print (limited quantities, only available to qualified reviewers/bloggers in the U.S.), kindle

And Then I Am Gone: A Walk with Thoreau tells the Story of a New York City man who becomes an Alabama man. Despite his radical migration to simpler living and a late-life marriage to a saint of sorts, his persistent pet anxieties and unanswerable questions follow him. Mathias Freese wants his retreat from the societal “it” to be a brave safari for the self rather than cowardly avoidance, so who better to guide him but Henry David Thoreau, the self-aware philosopher who retreated to Walden Pond “to live deliberately” and cease “the hurry and waste of life”? In this memoir, Freese wishes to share how and why he came to Harvest, Alabama (both literally and figuratively), to impart his existential impressions and concerns, and to leave his mark before he is gone.
