“Run Toward The Sun: Remembering Juanita Rogers” s ia supernatural Photo Memoir of Juanita Rogers, a black self- taught artist from the South . This is a story about an African -American woman and a young privileged white woman -both artists . Behind this double biography is a soulful sub-text that acknowledges the force of friendship, and the fears and strengths that shape and change the lives of not only these two women, but all of us. A story of two bold women, both who chose not to make safe choices. One is rich and one is poor. Both are from the South, and both are artists. They become friends. Through their eclectic friendship, each on their personal quest, they travel through their own rite of passage and gain a better understanding of themselves and each other.—–a story woven with a curious thread…and the devil may care duet of this unusual friendship is true.

I first met Juanita Rogers more than thirty-five years ago, and became a frequent visitor to her home near Montgomery. Over the years I amassed many hours of audio and video-taped interviews with Juanita Rogers and her rural primitive surroundings, and photographed her and many of her creations.

The book is filled with Photographs and quotes from Rogers . The book also contains one essay on Juanita Rogers and her work. Folk art scholar,Tom Paterson, has provided an art-historical appraisal of Juanita’s sculptures and paintings.

Hers is a story of an incessant drive for creative expression amidst poverty, social struggle, and tremendous physical disability. Anton Haardt

Juanita Rogers (1934-85) lived in an isolated, poor life in southern Alabama. Her TV set was constantly on. Each picture represents a highly personalized, idiosyncratic takeoff on various TV characters and themes. From her hysteria-induced poker game titled “Card Gamer” to “Camu Head,” an eccentric interpretation of the Coneheads from “Saturday Night Live,” Rogers’ pieces show humor and heightened imagination.

Biography/Ancient History – I, Livia: The Counterfeit Criminal

I LiviaI, Livia: The Counterfeit Criminal
Author: Mary Mudd
ISBN: 978-1412046060
Genre: Biography; Ancient History; Empowered Women

History has portrayed Livia Drusilla, the third and much beloved wife of Caesar Augustus, as a conniving, Borgia-like criminal, maintaining that Livia killed or incapacitated Augustus’ descendants through his previous wife to promote the political career of her son by a former husband. Author Robert Graves, in his novel, I, Claudius, based his fictitious rendering of Livia upon this malevolent representation. The book and the British Broadcasting Corporation adaptation of it for television perpetuated the image of Livia as a devious dynastic murderess in the popular mind.

I, Livia: The Counterfeit Criminal aspires to correct the misconception, and present an accurate assessment of this much-maligned woman. The study’s comfortably readable style is intended for general audiences.

Genre: Biography

Almost Pronounced Dead, Author Recovers To Tell Her Amazing Story of Survival and Rebuilding a Life

After being hospitalized by a horrendous accident, the doctors were ready to pull the plug, warm up the body, and begin harvesting organs for waiting recipients.

Then Maria Federici moved her hand, halting the procedure, and began her personal journey to recovery.

While Maria was returning from work in February 2004 an unsecured item of furniture went flying from a rental trailer, smashing onto the roadway and propelling a large piece of wood through the windshield striking Maria in the head. The impact caused massive brain injuries, complete blindness, and destroyed her face.

Just when doctors in the emergency room gave up on any hope of recovery, Maria decided otherwise, thus beginning her remarkable story of survival, recovery, and rebuilding her life by taking some of the most challenging obstacles and learning to overcome them.

Speaking of that moment, Maria says: After doing everything they could and using the best judgment possible, they deemed my injuries to be terminal. They sent my family and friends home. Then began warming my body up in preparation for organ donation. At that point so I m told I reached out into the darkness and pushed the nurse s arm away.

Since the accident, Maria has undergone nearly a dozen reconstructive surgeries, had a state law named in her honor (Maria s Law) making it a crime not to secure loads, and won a $15.5 million judgment against the trailer rental company and the man who failed to tie down the load. After the company appealed, Maria settled for a lesser amount which paid for her medical bills and allows her to live comfortably.

The author said she wrote the book to encourage other people facing major obstacles in life. The advice she gives in Obstacles Bring Em is: You think you got problems? Obstacles in your life? Some major setback got you down? . If that s true, keep at it. Find a way through it all. Fight. Search. Struggle. Fail and try again and again and again. I did. And look at me now. For now I m out Obstacles Bring Em serves as a shining example for readers who need encouragement in how to face and fight obstacles and never give up. As she lives life to the fullest after the accident, Maria looks forward to the day when things like stem cell study provide a cure for vision loss.

Maria has been featured in several television newscasts and interviewed countless times by reporters following the accident. One television interview of her working as a blind bartender was posted on you-tube and went viral.
