Sully Wheeler doesn’t care why his cattle are disappearing. He doesn’t care why but it has to stop. Perhaps it’s the cost of hiding from his past, but who would steal from a one-time gunfighter?

The NW Mounted Policeman that Sully contacted appeared more intent on stopping vigilante action than in stopping theft. If that proves to be the case, Sully will recover his own property, even if it takes gunfire to do it.

Who is this Mountie, anyway? Is he a cop or something else entirely? Is he working to support the crown, leave the crown or actually do something for the settlers?

And while we’re talking about that Mountie, isn’t he spending too much time with that newspaper lady?

Historical Fiction – Into the Mountains

How do you save your family when they are faced with hate and racism on all sides? How do you avoid fear every minute of every day?

In the years following the North West Rebellion of 1885 many Métis “disappeared” as many went into hiding to avoid racism and mistreatment. Admittedly, some like Gabriel Dumont went south of the 49th parallel into the US. What happened to the rest?

Almost a century later Métis suddenly appeared as individuals and communities throughout the West. Perhaps “Into the Mountains”, fiction though it is, supplies some explanation.

Hiding / racism / running from hate / fear / escape to exile / retribution

The North West Rebellion of 1885 ignited and fuelled emotions in all those groups who populated the west. It didn’t matter if the group was Métis, Canadian Militia, North West Mounted Police, white ranchers, farmers or townsmen or one of the many indigenous tribes there was more than enough hate, fear and anger for everyone.

The population of Métis suddenly decrease dramatically. They suddenly “disappeared” as many went into hiding to avoid racism and mistreatment. Admittedly, some like Dumont went south of the 49th parallel into the US. What happened to the rest?

Almost a century later, upon recognition of their status by the Canadian Government Métis suddenly appeared as individuals and communities throughout the West. Perhaps “Into the Mountains”, fiction though it is, supplies some explanation.

Historical Fiction / Thriller – The Trunk

The Trunk
By Dale L. Rollings
ISBN: 978-1483496672
ASIN: B07KZRDB7G
Genre: Historical Fiction, Spy Thriller
Formats Available For Review: Kindle, Nook, Apple, Kobo

Goaded by the intimidation of the irascible and quirky Aunt Mildred after the death of Don’s Father, Hugo Jurgens, Don and Connie Jurgens search for a steamer trunk filled by Don’s mother, Frieda, before her death. It contains photographs, clippings and family memorabilia, but also some disturbing and unexplainable items: German passports, a Luger and two Nazi Iron Cross medals.

Most intriguing is a series of seventeen diary-like notebooks written by Frieda spanning the time when she and Hugo met in 1929 through 1945. The notebooks, at first, are benign, but begin to reveal the conflicted lives of a young couple living in the crossfire of the Pro-German- Community of South St. Louis during the rise of the Third Reich. To the surprise and dismay of their son, Don and his wife, Connie, the notebooks chronicle the slide, motivated purely by greed, of Hugo and Frieda from good citizens into full-fledged Nazi Spies.

Frieda’s position as secretary to an officer of a major Defense Contractor make her of particular interest to the Nazis, and the information to which she has access is a valuable insight into the refining of Uranium 232 for which the Nazis are willing to pay. Freida and Hugo’s need, and greed, in a time of economic depression, with the expense of starting a family and the forces of a young marriage, coupled with Hugo’s, struggling business, make the delivery of classified secrets for cash an attractive proposition.

But the Nazis want something far more dangerous, more destructive and more treacherous, for which they will pay handsomely – much more than for the secrets previously delivered. With an offer of significant magnitude, they entice Freda and Hugo to Berlin to be looked over by the German High Command, and, if found satisfactory, to be offered the opportunity of a lifetime. Only then, do they learn that the scheme calls for the death of thousands of Americans and the destruction of most of their home City of St. Louis. The diabolical scheme has huge risks, but a lifetime of rewards for Hugo and Frieda.

Driven by greed and willing to assume the risk, they accept, and the Plan is put in motion.

Only through an unusual and unexpected turn of events is the plan thwarted, and forty years later their only Son, Donald, and Daughter-in-Law, Connie, are left to bring the Plan to a violent and permanent end.

“One Marine’s deeply personal account of the cold realities of combat.” —John H. Briggs, Major, United States Army, Retired

“I felt informed, moved and, ultimately, encouraged.” — David J. Hogan, editor-in-chief and contributing writer, The Holocaust Chronicle

“We cannot possibly comprehend the battlefield terror that changed their inner being forever. ‘War is Personal’ helps us to better understand” — Lt. Col. Jaime Parent, USAF, author of Moving Past PTSD

The Invasion of Okinawa was one of the bloodiest battles of WWII Pacific. Roy Wilkes, Private, USMC was unfortunate enough to have a front-row seat. True, gripping stories and pictures reveal the mind, heart, and soul of a fighting WWII Marine.

EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOK:
“The grim reaper missed me. The dumb bastard had a close-up swing at me on six different occasions—and missed.”

“The casualties were monumental. Trucks were coming down the lines with Marines piled like cordwood. They put ponchos over ’em, but you could see all these feet dangling out. It was like a conveyor belt. We were going up and they were coming back. The only difference is we were alive—and they were dead.”

“Continuous rain dampened the soul. The low, thick dark clouds made sure God didn’t see. What happened here was a secret from Him. God was busy someplace else. So this part of His Universe went insane.”

Historical Fiction – From Peasant to Emperor

From Peasant to EmperorFrom Peasant to Emperor
The Life of Liu Bang
By Victor Cunrui Xiong

Published: October 2018

Genre: Historical Fiction, Biographical Fiction
Formats Available For Review: pdf, Can be sent to kindle from NetGalley

This fictionalized biography, allegedly written by the first-century historian Ban Gu, tells one of the least likely rages-to-power stories, in which a penniless peasant rose to become the founder of the mighty Han dynasty that rivaled Rome as one of the two great powers of Eurasia.

When the eponymous protagonist, Liu Bang, launched a rebellion in 209 BCE, he was a poor peasant of 47 with a reputation as a ne’er-do-well, a womanizer, and a drunkard. He seemed to have a slim chance at success at a time when all the heroes in the realm contended for power and dominance. Against all odds, however, he trounced his rivals to found the Han dynasty and went on to quell numerous rebellions that challenged his rule. By the time of his death, a solid foundation had been laid for a great empire that was to last 400 years.
