Christian Living/Sports – Fishing for God–and vice versa

Rooney, who calls himself a “card-carrying codger,” has fished now for 70 years, in places ranging from Hawaii to Virginia, Montana to Maine and Mexico. His stories have graced many outdoor-oriented publications, including Outdoor Life magazine, where he served as managing editor.

As his love for the natural world matured, he began to wonder why, in a variety of special spots–on a wild trout stream in the Blue Ridge, or casting a surf rod into the huge, molten sunball boiling up over the brink of the Atlantic, or sitting in an old rowboat with his best friend in the idyllic calm of an Ontario lake–why did he feel so … utterly peaceful? So apart and yet so much a part of everything that’s important in life? This delightful pastime of fishing, he says, can bring more than just a peaceful day and a full stringer of fine eating: It can be a form of love. And where there is love, there is–you guessed it–God.

This book is not a sermon–not even close. It’s a series of factual fishing stories (and a few hunting stories as well) that hint at a higher plane, a positive mindset that can cause someone smitten by the natural world to look upward, to sense that the “Big Guy” is right there in the boat with him. Here’s how the author puts it: “It seems I’ve ‘fished’ for Him all my life, and He in turn has set His hook into my soul and has been reeling me home to Him all that while. Wow!”

If you’re low on energy, seek out Roxanne; she’ll get you back on track. I’ve never met a person with so much passion and drive to help others. She’s scored a Hat Trick with her “Puck Stops Here” nutritional book. Hockey is getting to be so competitive and skilled. Players need to realize that what they are putting into their bodies is equally important as the physical training they are doing. Thanks Roxanne for laying it out in such an easily digestible book form!! ~ Lance Pitlick, former NHLer

As a youth hockey coach, I find that the majority of young elite athletes do not know how to fuel their bodies properly. And much of that begins with the need to educate their parents. Roxanne’s book provides the core principles of sports nutrition. It also provides numerous examples and suggestions for others to follow. This is a great read for aspiring young athletes and their parents. ~ Travis Howe, Youth Hockey Coach

“As a hockey mom to a growing teen player, I love that this book provides quick reference suggestions for the healthiest (and quickest) solutions to eating around a busy hockey schedule! It also goes beyond and provides the supporting information and specifics for a host of health issues! Awesome go-to book for healthier skaters both now and in the future! Thank you for addressing this ongoing concern for hockey families!” ~ Shannon Gilbert, Hockey Mom

Sports/Adventure Memoir – Call Of The Jungle

How a Camping-Hating, City-Slicker Mum Survived an Ultra Endurance Race through the Amazon Jungle

The Jungle Marathon is arguably the world’s toughest endurance race. The 254km multi-stage, unsupported ultra-endurance race through the heart of the Amazon Jungle has unique challenges that no other race can provide, and testimonials from athletes who have completed it leave no doubt that the unforgiving and hostile environment of the Amazon Jungle is the ultimate endurance athletes challenge.

The route consists of river and swamp crossings in primary jungle, very steep climbs and descents, tracks through deep jungle areas where jaguars roam freely, and beautiful fluvial beaches that separate the Amazonian waters from the dense jungle canopy. The terrain is both stunningly beautiful and soul-destroying in its extremeness.

The extreme heat and humidity can have devastating effects on unacclimatized athletes and many fall victim to this every year. It’s impossible to tell who may be affected but the sure thing is that every year someone will be affected!

Amanda Barlow describes the agony and the ecstasy of her experience, as she becomes the first Australian female to have competed in the Jungle Marathon. Along with 76 competitors, from 22 different countries around the world, she leaves the comforts of home behind to spend a week racing through the deep Amazon Jungle with just a hammock and a backpack. Every day provides new challenges, unpredictable obstacles and formidable weather that will test her physical and mental resolve to their limits.

The ninth running of the Jungle Marathon would prove to be a race like no other, with a controversial finish to Stage 4 igniting a cascading sequence of events that no-one saw coming. The race director faces some tough decisions that would see her and her team working tirelessly through the night to re-route Stage 5 in an effort to protect the competitors from unpredictable dangers that were never meant to be a part of this race. The future of the Jungle Marathon hinges on the outcome of the final stages of the race and the revelations of what has transpired behind the scenes stuns the physically drained competitors, and in the next 24 hours will divide the loyalties of competitors and organisers alike. One thing is for sure – the runners who still remain in the race and cross the finish line of the 6th and final stage, will surely deserve their medal!

Sports – Meet the Lunatics Who Run Your Kids’ Sports Leagues

Meet the Lunatics Who Run Your Kids’ Sports LeaguesMeet The Lunatics
By Jack Malley
Publisher: JRC Publishing
ISBN: 978-0989249911
Published: April
Pages: 190
Genre: Sports/Humor
Format Available For Review: Print

“Meet The Lunatics Who Run Your Kids’ Sports Leagues” is a first person, light hearted look at the over-the-top youth sports culture. Among other things, the book gives readers the scoop on the dicey issues that sports parents inevitably face including coach nepotism, travel team elitism, “other parent” conflicts, early specialization, the political correctness that pervades youth sports, and the high school revisited culture that tends to emerge in the sports parent community. The text is enhanced by illustrations of the parent characters that are found in virtually every U.S. town including the Delusional Coach Dad, PC Team Mom, PC League President, Hypochondriac Mom, Evil Coach Dad, I Don’t Give A Crap Parent and Know It All Dad. In the last chapter, the author introduces his new comic strip, entitled “Joe Brady, Youth Sports Mogul,” which follows the life and times of a buffoon coach.
