Book Description:
Throughout much of my married life, I lived under the illusion that I had it all together – it was everyone else that needed fixing. Several years into my second marriage my husband, a Deputy Sheriff, became a workaholic and was never home. Meanwhile, I became a volunteeraholic, too busy to face the fact that we had become two strangers under one roof, raising three kids.

God revealed Himself to me through the different women I volunteered with. As my heart slowly opened to God’s presence, my marriage came crashing down around me. As I cried out for God’s help, I discovered my husband’s affair. I found myself surrounded by faithful people who gave me the strength to face the problems in my marriage and the tools needed to begin fixing it.

Over the next four years, my husband’s health deteriorated and he was forced to retire. Through this God continually showed me I was In His Way and then, when He knew He had my attention, He would proceed to show me how to do things In His Way. In the end, what God told me to do, saved my husband’s life, and our marriage. What was broken is now fixed by the grace and love of God.

Almost Pronounced Dead, Author Recovers To Tell Her Amazing Story of Survival and Rebuilding a Life

After being hospitalized by a horrendous accident, the doctors were ready to pull the plug, warm up the body, and begin harvesting organs for waiting recipients.

Then Maria Federici moved her hand, halting the procedure, and began her personal journey to recovery.

While Maria was returning from work in February 2004 an unsecured item of furniture went flying from a rental trailer, smashing onto the roadway and propelling a large piece of wood through the windshield striking Maria in the head. The impact caused massive brain injuries, complete blindness, and destroyed her face.

Just when doctors in the emergency room gave up on any hope of recovery, Maria decided otherwise, thus beginning her remarkable story of survival, recovery, and rebuilding her life by taking some of the most challenging obstacles and learning to overcome them.

Speaking of that moment, Maria says: After doing everything they could and using the best judgment possible, they deemed my injuries to be terminal. They sent my family and friends home. Then began warming my body up in preparation for organ donation. At that point so I m told I reached out into the darkness and pushed the nurse s arm away.

Since the accident, Maria has undergone nearly a dozen reconstructive surgeries, had a state law named in her honor (Maria s Law) making it a crime not to secure loads, and won a $15.5 million judgment against the trailer rental company and the man who failed to tie down the load. After the company appealed, Maria settled for a lesser amount which paid for her medical bills and allows her to live comfortably.

The author said she wrote the book to encourage other people facing major obstacles in life. The advice she gives in Obstacles Bring Em is: You think you got problems? Obstacles in your life? Some major setback got you down? . If that s true, keep at it. Find a way through it all. Fight. Search. Struggle. Fail and try again and again and again. I did. And look at me now. For now I m out Obstacles Bring Em serves as a shining example for readers who need encouragement in how to face and fight obstacles and never give up. As she lives life to the fullest after the accident, Maria looks forward to the day when things like stem cell study provide a cure for vision loss.

Maria has been featured in several television newscasts and interviewed countless times by reporters following the accident. One television interview of her working as a blind bartender was posted on you-tube and went viral.

Biography – MANY BLESSINGS: A Tapestry of Accomplished African American Women

MANY BLESSINGS: A Tapestry of Accomplished African American Women
By Sonnee Weedn, PhDMany Blessings
Publisher: Chispa Publishing
ISBN: 978-0983277606
Pages: 332
Genre: Biography, Women, African American

n 2002, Marin County psychologist, Dr. Sonnee Weedn, was asked to treat a young, urban, African American woman. Believing that as a white woman living in the reality of de facto segregation, she was not knowledgeable enough to treat this woman in psychotherapy, she set about to learn more about African American culture. This stimulated her thinking about African American women. What was it that allowed them to survive and thrive despite the double prejudice of racism and sexism. She wondered about the historical implications of the confluence of the Civil Rights Movement and the Women’s Movement on this particular cohort of women, most who had come of age during law-enforced segregation. She traveled the country for three years, interviewing many African American women, some famous and others unknown except in their own particular circles of influence. She studied these women to determine what encouraged them to transcend discrimination and other obstacles they faced in order to rise up and claim their destinies as powerful and altruistic women. Ultimately, she chose thirty of the women she interviewed to represent the seven strengths she identified as having sustained them and allowed them to flourish. She believes that these seven strengths are the historical legacy of all African American women today, and encourages all women, regardless of ethnicity to learn from their example to increase their own resilience and determination.
