The Thundering is the story of Cathy Morgen, a psychologist in Portland, Oregon in 1961.  Cathy faces the most challenging case of her career when she encounters Joseph, an institutionalized teenage boy, who behaves exactly like a panicked mustang – kicking, neighing and biting.  Having failed another young patient, who committed suicide, Cathy takes on Joseph’s treatment, hoping to redeem herself for the tragedy.  She faces resistance from many sources, including her conservative husband Dan, and an arrogant psychiatrist with his own ideas for treating Joseph.  To heal the troubled boy’s shattered identity, Cathy struggles to piece together bits of his bizarre past, which include abandonment as a child, a stint at a carnival sideshow, and a cryptic brand on his hip.  A dramatic escape and a horrifying revelation will ultimately help Cathy lead Joseph the horse-boy back to the world of humanity…at great cost to herself.
