Probing the Future: The art and science of prediction
By David Delphenich
Published: March 2013
Format Available For Review: Print or PDF
In part one, some of the various attempts that have been made to predict the future – both serious and fanciful – are examined, including some famously bad predictions. In the second part, the approach of general systems theory is used to explain why some dynamical systems are so unpredictable. The Dust Bowl is used as an example of how complex systems can interact in ways that are hard to predict, as well as the stock market and the dynamics of the human mind.
