If you combine the dark comedy of a Carl Hiassen story with the psychological depth and violence of a Jordan Harper novel you get The Mike Khepri Mysteries by debut author R.L. Frazier. This wickedly funny, grotesque, and gloriously weird romp follows Chuck Manchego and his beetle-faced sidekick, Mike Khepri, as they tear their way through rural Oklahoma in raucous, thinly disguised trials of self-discovery and awakening. The mysteries they undertake propel them into a supernatural crime-scape where the stakes are the preservation of the soul and of sanity itself. This offbeat novel skewers masculinity while finding absurdity and humor in life’s cruelties and failed dreams. Beneath the mayhem lies an exploration of suffering, creativity, and the search for meaning in a world that rarely makes sense.
